New DLR ISTAR research aircraft arrives in Braunschweig

On 31 January 2020, the new DLR ISTAR (In-flight Systems and Technology Airborne Research) aircraft – a modified Falcon 2000LX – flew from the Dassault plant in Bordeaux-Mérignac to its new home at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) in Braunschweig. The arrival of ISTAR in Braunschweig marks the completion of the first phase of its conversion at Dassault, during which the original aircraft was prepared for the installation of extensive instrumentation in accordance with DLR specifications. Commissioning will now commence at the DLR site in Braunschweig with the integration of a basic measurement system and initial flights. By the mid-2020s, ISTAR will be fully operational as an in-flight simulator, having undergone many additional and extensive modifications. ISTAR will then be used for the evaluation of increasingly automated flight operations, pilot assistance systems and unmanned flight. DLR at the Paris Air Show 2019

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will be showcasing its latest projects and research results from 17 to 23 June 2019 at this year’s Paris Air Show. At the joint German stand in Hall 2C, DLR will be featuring its activities in digitalisation, climate change and maintaining mobility. On display will be technical innovations for eco-efficient aircraft with lower carbon dioxide and noise emissions, including electric flight, as well as the DLR Falcon 20E, the flying laboratory for environmental and climate research. A model of the German-French satellite mission MERLIN for the observation of the greenhouse gas methane will also be showcased. This mission focuses on the global monitoring of the dynamic system Earth from space. The mobile astronaut assistant CIMON®, the planned demonstrator of a reusable rocket stage and the two instruments that DLR has contributed to the European BepiColombo mission to Mercury round off the trade fair appearance in the space sector. DLR tests the City-ATM system at the Köhlbrand Bridge in Hamburg

Parcel-delivery drones, air taxis and uncrewed inspection aircraft will to fly over cities and interact with one another in the future. They must be able to recognise and avoid one another, ideally before even taking off. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and its partners in the City Air Traffic Management (City-ATM) project conducted successful flight tests around the Köhlbrand Bridge in late April 2019 to demonstrate how drones are already able to cooperate with one another, as demonstrated by flying around a bridge, amid active shipping and road traffic. DLR implements test campaign for sectorless air traffic management

Air traffic will continue to grow in the coming years, increasing the workload of air traffic controllers. Researchers at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) have been examining what would happen if controllers viewed airspace as a whole, rather than continuing the current practice of dividing it into small areas known as ‘sectors’. In Budapest, DLR has been investigating the specific implementation of this novel concept, together with HungaroControl, the Hungarian Air Navigation Service Provider. Several airports controlled remotely by a single controller

Since the invention of the Remote Tower concept by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) in 2002, the idea has made great progress and is now being used for remote air traffic control, initially at small airports in Sweden and Germany. DLR researchers and their international partners in SESAR2020 project PJ05 have carried out simulations to investigate how a single air traffic controller can control not just one, but multiple airports. SESAR solution to enhance safety of mixed air traffic in Europe

Rotorcraft and general aviation fly at different speeds and altitude to commercial traffic, making the management of the traffic more complex. Flight trials conducted by SESAR members DLR, Thales and Airbus Helicopters, are showing how advanced approach and departure procedures can enable more efficient mixed air traffic operations, especially in adverse weather. Conducted between October and December 2018 within the framework of the 2020 project “Enhanced Arrival and Departures” (PJ.01 EAD) project, the flight trials demonstrated a candidate solution (PJ.01-06) to allow rotorcraft to fly advanced point-in-space procedures, such as radius curves legs. Continue reading →
